Surgical experience and services provided
Mr. Gaine has worked as a general orthopaedic and trauma surgeon in Sligo General (now University) Hospital since 2003, with a special interest in hip and knee replacement surgery including revision surgery. He also performs paediatric orthopaedic surgery. He introduced the Ponsetti technique for club foot to Sligo and runs a multidisciplinary baby hip clinic. He is experienced in trauma and fracture surgery, with regular on call commitments, keeping up to date with modern fracture management techniques.
He has multiple publications in medical journals including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, the British Medical Journal and Injury amongst others. He has completed Master’s theses on ‘Medical Errors’, ‘Post Amputation Rehabilitation’ and the ‘Optimal Design of a Hospital Foyer’. He has also written a book entitled ‘Men’s Health – Staying Alive Over 50’.
Common procedures performed include:
Hip and Knee replacements including revisions and partial knee replacement (unicondylar).
Knee arthroscopy and meniscal repair and anterior cruciate ligament repairs.
Bunion surgery on feet, toe deformities & ankle ligament deficiencies.
Hand surgery including carpal tunnel decompression, trigger finger release and Dupuytren’s contracture
Back pain epidurals/ trigger point injections, discectomy for back pain and sciatica
Injections for shoulder pain, tennis elbow pain, thumb arthritis, sciatica and sacroiliac joint pain, plantar fasciitis and joint injections. Injections therapy includes cortisone, hyalurgon gel, Arthrosamid for knee arthritis and PRP (plasma rich protein).
